Top sailing events in Barcelona

Discover the best sailing events in Barcelona! Sailing used to be the main form of trade and long-distance transport in the world. However, for many years, this practice has been maintained as a sporting activity that consists of the art of moving a boat by taking advantage of the waves and the wind.

Barcelona is one of the cities best prepared to host events in this discipline, thanks to Barcelona’s marinas, which were built in 1992 for the Olympic Games that took place in the city.

At Lugaris, we don’t want you to miss out on the excitement of these regattas, and we’re going to hoist our sails to present you the top sailing events in Barcelona.

The 37th edition of the America’s Cup Sailing Competition

Undoubtedly, one of the most eagerly awaited sailing events in Barcelona this year is the 37th edition of the America’s Cup. This event is considered to be the sporting event with the greatest impact after the Olympic Games and the football World Cup. In 2024, the competition will be held in Barcelona, exactly on 22nd August.

The Catalan capital will host the final preliminary event and the Challenger Selection Series. Therefore, many people are looking for their accommodation in Barcelona during the America’s Cup sailing competition. The heart of this event, where the activity will take place will be in the Olympic Port, which has been remodelled to accommodate the participating teams, with their different boats.

In addition, an information area full of experiences based on new technologies will be open to the public, to help spectators who are less expert in the discipline to understand this sport. There you will be able to find out about the history of sailing, the teams taking part in the regatta, innovation in the boats, the science being developed around the sport, and so on.

The truth is that this year’s competition may mark a turning point, because in addition to the technological innovations that have been implemented, it is the first edition in which women will compete! So you can start preparing to be part of the America’s Cup, one of the most important sailing competitions in Barcelona of all time.

Barcelona World Race

The Barcelona World Race is one of the most important sailing events in Barcelona, created so that two-crew boats can compete against each, and is held every four years. This competition is organised by the Foundation for Ocean Sailing in Barcelona (FNOB) and starts in the port of Barcelona.

For three months, all the contestants sail across over 46,000 kilometres of oceans and seas around the world, without the possibility of getting off their boat. The first edition of the race left the port of Barcelona on 11 November 2007 and the last one took place in the 2018-2019 season. However, we still do not know the dates of the next edition of the Barcelona World Race.

Conde Godó Trophy

The Conde de Godó Trophy is another of the main sailing events in Barcelona. It is an annual regatta held in the waters off Barcelona. It is one of the oldest and most prestigious events in Spain, having been held for more than 50 years. Its name pays tribute to Don Manuel de Godó Lallana, a passionate sailor who was a very influential figure in the world of sailing.

Year after year, renowned sailors gather in the port of Barcelona to kick off this event. One of the most remarkable aspects of this event is its ability to attract national and international contestants.

Throughout the days of the Conde de Godó Trophy, competitions for several boat categories can be enjoyed, ranging from the largest sailing yachts to the smallest boats. This makes the event accessible to a wide range of sailors.

Copa del rey MAPFRE

The Copa del Rey MAPFRE is a sailing regatta held annually in the waters off the island of Mallorca. However, on many occasions, Barcelona is used as the starting or stopover port for some of the legs of this competition. Therefore, the city of Barcelona becomes a key point in the regatta circuit.

This sporting event attracts teams from all over the world and is one of the most important sailing regattas in Europe, as boats from different classes are allowed to participate.

Barcelona International Sailing Center

The Barcelona International Sailing Center is a leading sailing centre in Barcelona that offers first-class sailing facilities. There, people of all levels can take sailing lessons. There are sailing baptisms for beginners as well as training courses for experienced sailors.

In addition to training activities, the centre hosts a number of internal events and competitions throughout the year. This has made it a meeting point for Barcelona’s sailing community and many visitors come to the centre to watch the excitement of its regattas.

Barcelona International Boat Show

The Barcelona International Boat Show (Saló nàutic de Barcelona) is one of the most important boat shows in Spain and Europe. Visitors can buy their ticket to discover the latest boats, equipment, technological innovations and services related to sailing and navigation.

As well as showcasing products and services revolving around the world of sailing, this is a meeting point for professionals in the business. The Boat Show provides them with the opportunity to do business and network with other companies and professionals, as well as sign up for upcoming national and international events.

It is not a sailing event per se, but it is a good opportunity to begin to understand the intricacies of the boating world and to meet the leading companies in the sector.
