Top places to have breakfast in Barcelona

Dining well in a restaurant is a pleasure, but enjoying a good breakfast is a privilege. It’s not always possible to sit quietly in one of the best caf√©s in Barcelona, in front of a coffee with a hot croissant, eggs, a ham sandwich or whatever you fancy. So, if you have the chance to go out for breakfast, you can’t miss it! It‚Äôs the most important meal of the day!

At Lugaris, we’re experts at recommending the best places in Barcelona. However, on this occasion we don’t want to talk about hotels or historic sites, but rather we’re just going to tell you about the best places to have breakfast in Barcelona.

Typical breakfasts in Barcelona

The concept of a “typical breakfast in Barcelona” is not very clear, as Barcelona is so cosmopolitan that it has taken a bit of the gastronomy of each culture and integrated it into its restaurants. However, you can still find the typical caf√©s in the streets, where they serve typical Barcelona breakfasts. We present them to you!

Gelida

Would you dare to eat a good pork cheek at 9 o’clock in the morning? The Catalans call this the typical “esmorzar de forquilla a Barcelona”, i.e. breakfast with a fork.  Gelida is a long-established establishment that has a good part of its 40-course menu up and running by as early as 7AM.

Here, you can try some of the most typical and intense breakfasts of the region, such as capipota, fricand√≥, tinned cod, etc. Without a doubt, you have to try it at least once in your life! Of course, when you’ve finished breakfast, you’ll be ready to go back to bed.

La Nena

Another typical breakfast in Barcelona, which can’t be missing in our list, is churros with chocolate. When the cold weather approaches, this is one of the best options to warm up in the morning. With this sugar-packed breakfast, you’ll be full of energy all day long, but a day is a day!

La Nena is an old café converted into one of the best places to have chocolate and churros in Barcelona. One of the best Sunday plans is to sit at a table with friends, choose one of the board games on the premises and enjoy the company while you fill your stomach. It also has an exclusive area for children to play freely.

Granja Viader

Another place we love for breakfast is Granja Viader, located very close to Les Rambles, at number 4, Carrer Xucl√°. This establishment opened in 1870 as a dairy, but over time they began to produce other dairy products.

A Fun-fact that we would like you to discover is that in 1931, the formula for the Cacaolat cocoa milk (which is to this day very popular in Catalonia) was created here.

You can order different types of breakfasts, ranging from sausage with bread and tomato, A ‚Äúsu√≠s‚ÄĚ (hot chocolate with whipped cream) with melindros or churros, crema catalana, butter toast, cream, yoghurts, cheeses. Remember that all the dairy products are homemade!

Bodega Can Ros

If you’re in the Gr√†cia neighbourhood, don’t miss Bodega Can Ros, one of the best places to have breakfast in Barcelona. This is a little gem that stands out for its sandwiches, which are among the best in the city. Another of its star dishes is the boquerons en vinagre (anchovies in vinegar). Dare you have toast with anchovies in the morning?
At Bodega Can Ros they do something magical: they manage to turn great stews into sandwiches. So, if you’re going for the first time, we recommend you order the meatball sandwich, and let us know what you think!

Can Vilaró

We couldn‚Äôt end this list with a restaurant that opens early in the morning to offer one of the most typical breakfasts in Barcelona. Can Vilar√≥ es a homey , down-to earth establishment right in front of the Sant Antoni market, ehre you will be able to eat among many locals. Warm savory dishes, following the esmorzar de forquilla tradition (which is regaining popularity), will delight your palate with local flavors and a true experience. If you want a taste of the real Barcelona first thing in the morning, this is the place to go.

Sampaka Cocoa

We have already talked about the classic chocolate breakfast with churros, so now we come back to the subject to bring you a much more gourmet experience. Cacao Sampaka is a modern place specialised in cocoa, where you will find more than 100 different types of chocolate

As well as a café, it is also a shop, so you can try the cocoa you like the most and take it home to continue with this sweet experience.

Some of their most popular chocolates are chocolate with extra-crispy puffed corn, combined with spices or aromatic herbs, caramel, 100%, 70% or 50% cocoa, with flavours or with milk, etc. You can also accompany the varied range of hot chocolates with a wide selection of pastries, including croissants and churros – everything is delicious in this little breakfast paradise in Barcelona!

Healthy breakfasts in Barcelona

Having a good breakfast is not incompatible with taking care of your body. Not all breakfasts offer pastries, fatty savory dishes, plenty of chocolate and sugar, but in Barcelona you can also find charming places that offer healthy breakfasts. Do you want to know about the places where you can find dishes with more flavour and fewer calories?

Little Fern Café

Little Fern Caf√© is one of the best places for brunch in Poblenou and is well worth a visit if you’re nearby. In this tasty caf√© you’ll be served a breakfast full of bright colours, flavour and vitamins. Their star dish is granola, which is very crunchy and prepared with organic and eco ingredients.

Combined with hibiscus yoghurt, rhubarb compote and coconut flakes, this is an energetic and delicious experience!

Matcha Gracias

If you’re a fan of matcha tea, you can’t miss this place for breakfast in Barcelona. Matcha Gracias is the first place specialising in matcha in the city. Here you’ll find this green tea in all its drinkable and edible versions. You can sit at one of their tables to try a matcha brownie, or order one of their healthy and vegan dishes.

All the food prepared here is free of ultra-processed products, so you can be sure that they care about your health. On the menu you will find savoury toasts, matcha-prepared desserts such as biscuits, donuts, crepes, cakes and breads.

Odacova

Odacova is a restaurant located in Eixample and has many vegan options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The portions are very good-sized and the value for money is pretty good. One of the star dishes they offer for breakfast is the vegan cheese margherita sandwich, which is delicious!

However, on their menu you will also find pancakes, toast and very complete breakfast bowls. You won’t fail to be amazed by their drinks section, as they have all kinds of coffees and teas, as well as a great matcha latte. Everything you drink can be prepared with the vegetable drink of your choice.

All the balanced breakfasts they offer include cereals, seeds, a vitamin-packed juice and a good coffee.

If you want, you can ask for cashew milk to accompany your coffee, as they make it homemade. We recommend you finish with an anti-ox juice, which mixes strawberries, orange, kiwi and lemon – it’s a flavour and vitamin bomb for your body!
